Unión and Belgrano took the first two spots in this year’s Copa Argentina quarter-final after narrow victories over fellow Primera sides Estudiantes and Defensa y Justicia respectively.
In the Estadio Julio Humberto Grondona, Unión eliminated Estudiantes after a goalless draw took the sides to a penalty shootout. Both sides had missed one in the regulation five but after El Tatengue had applied the pressure to Estudiantes in sudden-death, Gabriel Graciani saw his effort saved by Nereo Fernández and so Leonardo Madelón’s side progressed to face either River Plate or Arsenal.
Later in San Juan, Belgrano defeated Defensa y Justicia thanks to goals from Claudio Bieler and Gastón Alvarez Suárez. Bieler provided an early lead from the penalty spot but Juan Kaprof pulled El Halcón level after 30 minutes with his first for the club. Another tie looked to be heading for penalties but with less than 15 minutes remaining, Alvarez Suárez sprung an offside trap and drilled a low shot beneath Agustín Rossi. Belgrano will play either Almagro or Juventud Unido.
