Olimpo picked up a thoroughly deserved first win of the season in Bahía Blanca on Friday night as Cristian Díaz’s side swept aside a well below-par Godoy Cruz.
The home side were dominant from kick off and it was no surprise when Carlos Rodríguez volleyed the opener from Jacobo Mansilla’s free-kick. Godoy Cruz had barely had a sniff but were given a boost just before the break when the Aurinegro saw Cristian Villanueva shown a second yellow card.
Sebastián Méndez would have hoped to get some reaction from his players but the truth was that Olimpo remained firmly in charge. With twenty minutes remaining, former Independiente youngster Francisco Pizzini spun in the penalty area to rifle in a second and as the game crept towards stoppage time, Fernando Coniglio added number three.
The 24-year-old centre forward produced a delicate lob with three defenders and goalkeeper Rodrigo Rey blocking his path to goal and the ball drifted over the heads of them all and into the net.
All credit to Olimpo, who were superb for 90 minutes but worrying times for Godoy Cruz after playing against ten men for more than half the match and shipping three to a normally very goal-shy side.
