Few would have predicted after four matches Newell’s Old Boys would still be unbeaten, sitting top of the Primera and Ignacio Scocco would be the league’s top scorer but La Lepra are enjoying a run of form that the supporters haven’t seen in a couple of years. Scocco, Maxi Rodríguez and Mauro Formica rolled back the years to defeat Atlético Tucumán with relative ease in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa and look a shadow of the side that struggled so badly over the past 12 months.
Scocco fired the opener after twenty minutes and it wasn’t long before the home side extended their lead. Once more the experienced trio combined and when Cristian Luchetti saved Maxi Rodríguez’s initial shot, Formica headed in the rebound.
Close to the hour mark and Scocco made all but certain the result with his second and although Cristian Menéndez scored a late consolation from the penalty spot, La Lepra celebrated another three points.
A little later in Santa Fe, Rosario Central were unable to find the net again and it enabled relegation threatened Atlético Rafaela to claim a decent point. If Marco Ruben was in the form that he has been since arriving to Central, Eduardo Coudet’s side would have taken three points but instead some wasteful finishing resulted in a third failure to find the net in four matches.
