Marcelo Gallardo has been showing Sebastián Driussi videos of Luis Suárez in order to aid his development and although the 20-year-old is still someway from the Uruguayan, the youngster is thriving this season in his more central role in attack with Lucas Alario. Driussi scored a brace for the second week running as River ran out 3-0 winners over Vélez Sarsfield in the Monumental but the visitors will feel aggrieved with some of Fernando Rapallini’s decisions.

Blas Cáceres was shown a straight red card after only nine minutes when he foolishly lashed out at Andrés D’Alessandro and while Vélez will claim there was little real contact it invited the referee to send him off.

With the numerical advantage River were dominant and were ahead in no time. Alan Aguerre should have done better with Lucas Alario’s shot from the edge of the penalty area but instead palmed the ball back into danger where Sebastián Driussi was on hand to smash in the rebound.

A disastrous first half got worse for Vélez when River were awarded a penalty and although Aguerre stopped Alario’s first effort, the linesman spotted the goalkeeper off his line and provided Alario with a second opportunity – one which he gratefully accepted to double the lead.

Driussi slotted a third shortly after half time and with the result never in doubt it was simply a question of whether River could add further misery on El Fortín. The home side simply cruised to the final whistle and they will arguably have no easier evening’s work this season while for Vélez it was another bitter disappointment. Omar De Felippe was confirmed as Cristian Bassedas’ successor this week but has a big task ahead of him.

Earlier in Avellaneda, Racing chalked up a first home win of the season with a deserved victory over Patronato.

After being frustrated by the visitors for the opening 45 minutes, the deadlock was spectacularly broken just after the break. Gustavo Bou escaped down the right and his clipped cross into the box was sensationally volleyed into the top corner by Lisandro López.

Supporters will have been worried to see midfielder Marcos Acuña leave the field injured but his replacement Santiago Rosales added a second to ensure all three points.

Racing Club  2 – 0  Patronato

River Plate  3 – 0  Vélez Sarsfield
