It was a tale of two new managers in Salta on Monday night and while Diego Cocca will be thrilled with the start of his second spell in charge of Racing, Ariel Holan will be feeling the heat from a frustrated Independiente fanbase after a 3-0 defeat.
Neither side have been particularly active in the transfer window yet so there was a familiar look to each side but it was Racing that took the early initiative.
Lisandro López’s nod down was rifled into the bottom corner by Gastón Díaz and shortly after Diego González tapped in a second before the 20 minute mark.
With Cebolla Rodriguez now gone and Ezequiel Barco away with the Argentina under-20s there was little inspiration from El Rojo and just as they looked throughout 2016, Independiente were low on creativity and chances.
Despite seeing plenty of the ball after half time, Holan’s side were unable to find a way past Agustin Orion and in the closing stages, Racing wrapped up the win.
Brian Fernández has just returned to the squad after his ban for the use of a recreational drug but the talented youngster came off the bench to add a wonderful third and hopefully put behind him a wasted couple of years.
Both sides will feel there is much to do before the start of the season but Independiente supporters let the players know how they felt when they arrived back at the team hotel.
