After two tight draws, Argentina under-20s were in desperate need of a first win of the 2017 Sudamericano and Claudio Ubeda’s side emphatically did that with a 5-1 win over Bolivia on Monday evening.
Boca Juniors striker Marcelo Torres earned his starting role with a brace against Uruguay and once again showed his goal scoring instincts to break the deadlock. Nahuel Molina’s cross from the right found his club teammate and Torres stooped to nod the ball past Ruben Cordano.
With Argentina on top, Bolivia were trying to keep Los Pibes at bay but a wayward pass out of defence fell to the feet of Brian Mansilla and the Racing youngster rifled a shot from distance into the bottom corner.
Bolivia needed half time but before the break found themselves further behind after Torres pounced on a fumble by Cordano for his fourth goal in two matches.
Tomás Conechny’s impressive cameos in the two previous games had earned him a place in the starting eleven and the San Lorenzo forward made it four shortly after half time with a well struck left footed shot from outside the penalty area.
Argentina were heading to the top of Group B but there was still time for substitute Lucas Rodríguez to head in a fifth and for Ramiro Vaca to score an excellent free kick by way of a consolation for Bolivia.
Los Pibes are not yet guaranteed a place in the final stage but are in a good position ahead of their final group game against Venezuela on Friday.
