Argentina are yet to have really impressed in the under-20 South American championships but Racing Club striker Lautaro Martínez has shown flashes of his enormous potential and if rumours in the local media are to be believed Arsenal are the latest club to register an interest.
According to Olé’s Racing Club correspondent Nicolás Montalá, Premier League club Arsenal have contacted Martínez’s agent to enquire as to the youngster’s availability.
The 19-year-old has been the jewel in Racing’s famous academy for a couple of years and is currently leading the line for Argentina in Ecuador with two goals in five matches at the Sudamericano.
Despite making his senior club debut in 2015 when he came on as a replacement for Diego Milito, Martínez finds himself behind the experienced and talented strike force of Lisandro López and Gustavo Bou but that doesn’t detract from how highly he is regarded.
A very mobile striker with rapid acceleration and wonderful technique, Martínez is a smart finisher and has been on the radar of European scouts for several years.
The standout player for Argentina in last year’s L’Aldúdia tournament Real Madrid were closely linked with a move for Martínez and reportedly had competition from Valencia, who have the first option on the youngster as part of the deal that saw Los Che sign Rodrigo de Paul.
Racing supporters will hope to see more of the striker in blue and white before any transfer to Europe materialises and perhaps at 19, playing time is what is needed to aid his development.
