Two goals in the first and last minute of the match were just enough for Argentina to claim a vital 2-1 win over Colombia on Thursday night and get back on track for World Cup qualification.

Following Monday’s defeat to Uruguay, Los Pibes were in desperate need of a result if they were to stand any chance of challenging for the title and they couldn’t have asked for a better start against Colombia.

There were less than 20 seconds on the clock when Santiago Ascacibar slipped the ball through to Marcelo Torres and the Boca Juniors striker slotted the ball past Manuel Arias for his fifth of the tournament.

Colombia remained a threat and had a Juan Hernández goal harshly ruled out for offside.

Shortly after half time and Argentina were dealt a blow when Brian Mansilla was stretchered off and their misery was compounded when Hernández beat Facundo Cambeses to the ball and headed Colombia level.

Los Cafeteros had Eduard Atuesta sent off for a challenge on Ezequiel Barco with a little over ten minutes remaining and just as it looked as though Argentina would run out of time, Martínez struck the winner.

Tomás Conechny did superbly on the left and his low cross was flicked into the net by the Racing striker to seal the victory.

Uruguay lead the way after their injury time win over Brazil and Venezuela climb to second after victory against hosts Ecuador but World Cup qualification remains in the balance.

Next up on Sunday for Argentina is Ecuador and another three points would put a place in South Korea firmly within reach.
