A suspension carried over from 2011 denied Juan Sebastián Verón a sensational return to the Copa Libertadores and the news got worse for Estudiantes as Botafogo inflicted an opening game defeat on El Pincha in Rio de Janeiro.

Nelson Vivas’ side are experiencing something of a blip domestically but started brightly in Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos with Lucas Rodríguez going close from distance.

However, the visitors fell behind after the half hour mark when a cross from the right was volleyed back across goal by Rodrigo Pimpão and acrobatically turned in by Roger.

Juan Otero equalised on the hour mark with a wonderfully hit free kick but Estudiantes quickly found themselves on the backfoot and their failure to clear the ball in the penalty box allowed Pimpão to rifle Botafogo back in front.

None of the five Argentine clubs to have started their Copa Libertadores campaigns have won and only River Plate remain yet to play. Estudiantes face Barcelona in La Plata in a little under a month and will be desperate for three points after the Ecuadorians beat holders Atlético Nacional.
