Qualification from the Sudamericano was barely achieved and on Wednesday morning, Argentina under-20s were drawn in a testing group for the World Cup in South Korea.
Diego Maradona and Pablo Aimar were both in attendance to conduct the draw and the iconic World Cup winner pulled Argentina from the pot to set up a tantalising Group A with hosts, South Korea, England and Guinea.
The first match of the tournament will see Claudio Ubeda’s side face old adversary England on May 20th in Jeonju and given Los Pibes route to the World Cup, an easier opener would perhaps have been preferred.
South Korea follow three days later in the same stadium before the final group game against Guinea in Seogwipo on May 26th.
Two years ago, arriving as Sudamericano champions, Argentina crashed out of the group stages despite boasting the likes of Angel Correa and Giovanni Simeone in the squad.
Ubeda doesn’t have the same profile of player but will be hoping that the goals of Lautaro Martínez and the leadership of Santiago Ascacibar can pull Los Pibes through.
