It was a mixed evening for Argentine clubs in the Copa Libertadores on Tuesday night with Godoy Cruz giving their hopes of qualification an early boost but Atlético Tucumán slumping to defeat and facing a struggle to progress.
Ángel González scored twice for Godoy Cruz as Lucas Bernardi’s side came from behind in Asunción to beat Libertad and for the timebeing sit unbeaten at the top of Group Six.
Angel Cardozo had rifled the home side ahead but González nicked in behind the defence to snatch an equaliser on the stroke of half time before pouncing in the 89th minute to seal the win.
With so few games played, there is still plenty to do for El Tomba but points on the road for a side that are usually pretty strong in Mendoza are invaluable.
Atlético Tucumán were not so fortunate and fell to a 2-1 defeat against Jorge Wilstermann in Cochabamba.
Jairo Palomino headed El Decano ahead after half time and a positive result looked on the cards but two swift goals from Gilbert Álvarez and Luis Cabezas turned the match round.
Already at the half way point in Group Five, qualification looks a tall order for Atlético Tucumán and the next home matches against Jorge Wilstermann and Peñarol are key.
