After last week’s Superclásico defeat, Boca Juniors were in desperate need of three points to reestablish their grip at the top of the table and although title chasing Newell’s ensured a nervy afternoon in La Bombonera, Darío Benedetto’s first half goal was enough to provide Guillermo Barros Schelotto some relief.
There was little between the two sides in the opening 45 minutes but a smart turn and low drive from 25 yards by leading scorer Benedetto forced the breakthrough.
Try as they might, the visitors were unable to find a way back into the game and while Boca probably had the chances after the break to ensure the win, neither could muster a goal. Jacobo Mansilla was sent off for La Lepra ten minutes from time and Boca held on for the points to go six points clear for now and end Newell’s title hopes.
In Victoria, Tigre were denied what would have been only a third win in fourteen matches as ten-man San Martín salvaged a point.
Lucas Menossi gave the home side a first half lead when Luis Ardente was unable to hold his stinging long range effort and when Marcos Gelabert was sent off in the 65th minute, El Matador should have been able to see out the result.
However, Emanuel Dening skipped through the heart of the Tigre defence to equalise with fifteen minutes remaining and with neither side able to force a winner, they had to settle for a share of the points.
