Normal service resumed in the Nacional B as Argentinos Juniors extend lead at the top

Darren Paul (@AuedsTouch) returns with an update on the exciting Nacional B…

Argentinos Juniors bounced back from their shock 2-1 away defeat last weekend to edge past Deportivo Santamarina to extend their lead over Guillermo Brown to six points at the top of the table. The only goal of the game came from Alexis Mac Allister in the 33rd minute. Mac Allister secured the points with one of the finest goals of the season, much to the delight of his manager and all in attendance. Mac Allister collected the ball in his own half, drove past a number of midfielders before firing a hard, flat pinpoint accurate finish into the top corner from all of 30 yards.

Guillermo Brown were unable to build on the momentum of last weekend as they were held to a goalless draw away to relegation strugglers Villa Dalmine on Friday evening. The result has opened the door for the inform Chacarita Juniors who are just three points behind with a game in hand on Guillermo Brown.

Chacarita Juniors left it late to secure the three points against lowly Boca Unidos. Not for the first time, Unidos have made it difficult for the bigger teams, but eventually pressure told and Chacarita took the lead and the win in the 84th minute. Matias Rodriguez bagged his second goal in three games with a looping header at the near post from a corner. The win puts Chacarita in touching distance of the second automatic promotion position and as one of the inform teams in the division, Guillermo Brown must surely be feeling nervous.

Instituto kept their slim promotion hopes alive with a home win over giant killing Independiente Rivadavia. Esteban Orfano grabbing the game’s only goal in the 25th minute of play with a side foot finish to complete a slick counter attacking move that sees the home side leapfrog Nueva Chicago into fourth position. Instituto are an outside bet at promotion as they are eight points back of Guillermo Brown, but have a better recent record with four wins and a defeat in their last five fixtures.

Nueva Chicago can all but kiss their promotion chances goodbye following defeat to Flandria, one nil at home. The visitors, who have moved up to ninth position following the win, scored the game winner in the 21st minute, Facundo Melivillo the scorer. Nueva Chicago are in poor form of late securing just five points from their last 15 available, the worst run of form of any top ten side.

Early promotion hopefuls Ferro have seen their chances fall apart in recent weeks as a run of inconsistent form continues. Ferro were beaten away to Estudiantes de San Luis thanks to a 37th minute penalty from Leonel Felices, the 33-year-old’s winner keeping his side comfortably mid table in 13th position.

The fixture of the round was a back and forth affair between San Martin Tucuman and Central Cordoba which ended all square at 2-2. Arnaldo Gonzalez gave the visitors a halftime lead after his 35th minute opener for the Cordoba outfit but the lead only lasted five minutes after the break as Mauro Quiroga netted his 7th goal of the season, his second in as many games. On the 63-minute mark the visitors were back in front through Leandro Becerra but their hopes of a victory were dashed by a 77th minute equaliser from Ramon Lentini also bagging his second goal in two games, his 17th of the season.

Atletico Parana’s terrible season continues to go from bad to worse as they were on the end of a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Brown de Adrogue at home. Luciano Nieto opened the scoring in the first half for the visitors before a second half double from Cristian Chavez secured all three points for Brown who move up to sixth position following with their third straight win. Parana remain rooted to the bottom, 9 points from safety with 8 games left to play.

To make matters worse for Parana, 22nd placed Crucero del Norte pulled off a surprise win over Almagro 2-0 at home. The win is just the first for Crucero since a 3-0 hammering of Estudiantes de San Luis back in April and puts them just four points from safety. Both goals in the win came in the second half, with Federico Dominguez netting the opener just before the hour mark and Pablo Ostrowski sealing the points at the penalty spot 9 minutes from time. The weekend could have been even better for Crucero had Juventud Unida not been able to hold Gimnasia Jujuy to a 0-0 away draw. Juventud sit in 19th position on 39 points.

Round 39 is a midweek round starting on Tuesday and finishing on Friday (British time) before the league takes a few weeks off. The round is full of exciting fixtures, but the most interesting matchups of the round are Guillermo Brown versus Atletico Parana, both sides in search of much needed wins for vastly different reasons. Ferro versus Douglas Haig should also be an entertaining fixture as will be Independiente Rivadavia at home to Chacarita Juniors, Guillermo Brown will be watching on hoping Rivadavia do them another favour.
