Racing Club’s Copa Sudamericana last 16 second leg this week is far more pressing and so Diego Cocca opted to rest a number of his starting eleven for the short trip to the Estadio Florencio Sola.
Victory in the same stadium secured Racing a Copa Libertadores spot on the final day of last season but there was no where near the same level of quality on Sunday afternoon. Despite having the majority of possession, La Academia failed to carve out any really meaningful chances and while Banfield were far from their best, Darío Cvitanich’s first half header was enough for the points.
Newly promoted Chacarita Juniors battled to their second point of the season away to Atlético Tucumán to maintain an unbeaten start to the Superliga.
Following on from last weekend’s draw with Tigre, Chacarita started well and Javier Mendoza squirmed through the home defence to give Los Funebreros a 23rd minute lead.
Unable to hold on, Luis Rodríguez eventually rifled in an equaliser and although both sides had clear chances to win it, neither could show the composure in front of goal to take all the points.
In Sunday’s early kick off, Vélez’s 100% record came to an end but Omar de Felippe’s side do remain unbeaten after holding on for a point against Talleres in Córdoba.
La T were the better side for large parts in what was a fairly uneventful game but Vélez are yet to concede a goal this season and showed plenty of that defensive mettle to keep another cleansheet. Both sides ended with ten men after Braian Cufré and Pablo Guiñazú were sent off in separate incidents but it couldn’t provide the impetus for either to find a winner.
Talleres 0 – 0 Vélez Sarsfield
Atlético Tucumán 1 – 1 Chacarita Juniors
Banfield 1 – 0 Racing Club
