It proved to be far harder than perhaps anticipated but San Lorenzo chalked up another victory to move within three points of leaders Boca despite a spirited display from Argentinos Juniors in the Nuevo Gasómetro.
Argentinos Juniors, who remain in relegation danger, slumped to a third consecutive 1-0 defeat, but posed a constant threat and will feel a little unfortunate to have left Bajo Flores with nothing.
Nicolás Blandi bundled in the game’s only goal after ten minutes following Lucas Chávez’s decent save from Paulo Díaz. However, Los Bichos had plenty of chances, none better than when Braian Romero blazed over a second half penalty.
Also only three points behind Boca, for the time being at least, are Unión after their late 3-2 win away to Patronato.
Following the midweek defeat to River Plate, Unión could have been excused for suffering a loss of confidence after falling behind earlier in Paraná to Sebastián Ribas’ close range header.
However, a stunning Diego Zabala strike and a brave Franco Soldano header swiftly turned the scoreline around. A second Ribas header pulled Patronato level on the hour mark but with ten minutes remaining Lucas Gamba sealed it from the penalty spot.
Unión and San Lorenzo move onto 21 points, hoping for another slip from Boca to remain hot on the leaders heels.
