Talleres were the closest challengers to Boca Juniors for the title for much of the season but defeat against Unión on Monday evening has left La T down in sixth and outside the Copa Libertadores qualification spots.
Unión seeking to secure a place in continental competition via the Copa Sudamericana had plenty of motivation and with no side leaving Santa Fe with three points this season, it was always likely to be a tough evening for Talleres.
And so it proved. Aldo Araujo had gone within inches of giving the visitors a lead but they fell behind when Jonathan Bottinelli headed in from a free-kick.
Unión continued to threaten and Bottinelli’s central defensive partner, the impressive Yeimar Andrade Gómez doubled the lead.
Watching their dream of Libertadores football slip away, Talleres had chances to get themselves back into it, none better than when Junior Arias was brought down by Nereo Fernández. However, the Unión goalkeeper saved Arias’ spot kick and the home side went up the other end for Diego Zabala to wrap up the victory with an accurate shot from 20 yards.
Unión’s difficult run-in against Boca and Independiente means their current Sudamericana spot is still up for grabs while Talleres face a must-win game against Huracán on Saturday.
Unión 3 – 0 Talleres
Finally in Bahía Blanca, Olimpo showed just why they are heading for the Nacional B as the Aurinegro were thrashed by firm relegation candidates for next season, Tigre.
Lacking goals throughout the campaign, Tigre led early as Javier Iritier tapped into an empty net and with the Olimpo defence in complete disarray, Ignacio Canuto headed a second.
An outstanding half-volley into the top corner by Luca Sosa made it three before half time and even when David Depetris pulled one back in the 87th minute, Tigre added another two. Ramón Mierez and Lucas Janson slotting in past Jorge Carranza in the absence of any defenders.
Olimpo will not be missed in the top flight but despite the result Tigre have a lot to do to ensure they don’t join at the end of next season.
