Boca need only a point from two games to secure their title defence after securing a nervy, late win over Unión on Sunday.
Godoy Cruz’s victory over Argentinos Juniors on Saturday, thanks to another Santiago García brace, meant that Boca were actually joined on 53 points overnight but with the Mendocinos having only one game remaining, Boca knew they remained in control.
Defeat to Unión on Sunday would have set up a nervy final week but another vital performance by Cristian Pavón set up both goals for Ramón Ábila and with it Boca are virtually over the line already ahead of Wednesday’s rearranged game with Gimnasia.
San Lorenzo joined Boca and Godoy Cruz with a guaranteed place in the 2019 Copa Libertadores after victory over Belgrano and now Huracán, Independiente, Talleres and Racing Club battle for the remaining two spots.
Huracán and Talleres played out a goalless draw and ten-man Independiente shipped a last minute equaliser against Gimnasia leaving Racing to close the gap with victory over Estudiantes. A win in midweek for La Academia would see two points separate the four teams ahead of the final round of fixtures.
Two of those sides will have to settle for a Copa Sudamericana spot, but for the remaining sides just below, competition is equally fierce as no one could take advantage of others dropping points this weekend.
In-form Defensa y Justicia slipped up away to Newell’s Old Boys, Unión lost to Boca, Argentinos Juniors were defeated by Godoy Cruz and Belgrano came away with nothing from their trip to San Lorenzo.
Just outside those six places, River Plate drew with Colón but with both sides making up their games in-hand in midweek, both could climb into contention before the final round.
So, in case you missed any of the action, here are all the games, all the goals and how the table looks after round twenty six…
