Copa Sudamericana qualification was very much on the minds of both Colón and River Plate when the two sides met on Monday evening but neither could secure the three points that would have put them in one of the six available positions.
Colón have proved a difficult side to break down for many Superliga teams and with captain Germán Conti marshalling the defence, River were unable to find a way through.
The home side started the brighter and should have led when Marcelo Estigarribia side-footed wide with only Franco Armani to beat.
However, River gradually began to assert control and as usual the introduction of Juan Fernando Quintero at the break saw Marcelo Gallardo’s side become a far greater threat. A deflected effort from the Colombian hit the upright and Ignacio Scocco wasted a couple of decent opportunities but it was difficult to claim either side deserved the win.
Colón and River both have games in-hand to play during this week ahead of the final weekend and with victories, they would climb into those Copa Sudamericana places but it remains very tight.
Colón 0 – 0 River Plate
Earlier in the Estadio Florencio Sola, Banfield earned a 2-1 win over Chacarita Juniors thanks to a brace by youngster Julián Carranza.
Only the woodwork saved Banfield from falling behind early but Carranza soon tapped in the opening goal after some dreadful Chacarita defending at a set-piece.
The post would later come to the rescue of the visitors and shortly after led to Elias Alderete skipping round goalkeeper Mauricio Arboleda to slide the equaliser.
Banfield pushed on for another and in the 72nd minute, Enzo Kalinski slipped in Carranza for his second.
