The weather claimed River Plate’s Superliga match against Estudiantes, pushing it back until Friday, but in a wet and blustery Santa Fe the remaining 68 minutes of Colón and Vélez Sarsfield went ahead.
When the two sides met a few weeks ago, a series of firecrackers thrown to the pitch saw the officials call it off and on Thursday evening, Vélez took revenge with a 1-0 win.
Both sides had chances but a heavily deflected Mauro Zárate free-kick was enough to seal the points. The on loan striker’s third spell at the club could be coming to an end but his firmly struck effort ballooned off the wall to wrong foot goalkeeper Alexander Domínguez.
A fourth straight league win for Vélez bodes well for next season under Gabriel Heinze while defeat for Colón means their hopes of Copa Sudamericana qualification take a serious hit.
