It seems only a matter of time before Cristian Pavón leaves Boca Juniors but president Daniel Angelici has confirmed that when the 22-year-old does it will be for a huge sum after Pavón put pen to paper on a new deal.

A key part in Boca’s title winning side last season, Pavón led the Superliga in assists and his original €33 million release clause was already drawing attention from Europe.

Arsenal have been linked with the lightning-quick forward and after Lionel Messi sung Pavón’s praises on Argentina duty, Barcelona have also been attributed with an interest in this window.

Boca are keen to retain Pavón until at least the end of the year after the Copa Libertadores but have moved to safeguard their asset in the meantime with a new four-year deal and an improved €50 million release clause.

“Pavón is staying, he has signed for four more years. The clause is €50 million and that was what we wanted to be calm,” Boca president Daniel Angelici told ESPN.

“We wanted to sell at the moment we understood was necessary. So, for now, we want Boca supporters to enjoy it.

“He [Pavón] knows that his future is in Europe but for now he is enjoying himself and that makes the Boca supporters, who love him so much, enjoy too.”

Boca play Libertad in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores and Pavón will be vital to the club’s hopes of lifting a seventh title before the end of the year. Any potential deal looks more likely to be done then rather than in this window.

Another player looking to stay at La Bombonera in the short term is Lisandro Magallán after Boca pulled the plug on his move to Ajax.

The Dutch giants had everything agreed for €9.5 million transfer and Magallán had even travelled to the Netherlands for a medical but with a complicated deal for AC Milan’s Gustavo Gómez now appearing dead in the water, Boca do not want to lose a key part of their defence.

“Magallán is staying. It’s a shame but I spoke with him and explained. The proposal from Ajax was very good but there are no centre-backs to replace him,” Angelici explained.

“I got together with him [Magallán] and explained that the club’s priority was sporting. He understood and will stay, at least, until the end of the year.”

Midfield duo Nahitan Nández and Wilmar Barrios have also attracted interest and that is likely to have increased after their roles with Uruguay and Colombia at the World Cup but Angelici appears calm here too.

“Both have release clauses and they are very high. That doesn’t mean that a club will come along and pay it and that the player will want to leave.”

Boca have already signed forwards Sebastián Villa and Mauro Zárate in addition to defender Carlos Izquierdoz but a goalkeeper remains high on their wish-list and Angelici spoke about the options available to manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto.

“First of all, after speaking with Guillermo, we are happy with [Agustín] Rossi but we have the possibility to bring [Gerónimo] Rulli on loan.

Patón [Nahuel] Guzmán was willing to come, but his club [Tigres] declared him non-transferable and when that happens with a club from México, there is no money to buy the player.

“So, now we continue the negotiations for Rulli.

“We are good because the club wants to loan him and he wants to come to Boca. There is a big difference in the money, because he earns a good salary overseas and the loan is also very high, but we are negotiating calmly. When there is a will, it is easier.”
