For the fourth time in five years Rosario Central are heading to the Copa Argentina final and this time El Canalla will be praying that they finally get the chance to lift the trophy. When Federico Mazur snatched Temperley an injury time equaliser to force the semi final to penalties it looked as though the B Nacional club would deny Central another shot at glory but a tense shootout eventually sent Edgardo Bauza’s side through.
There was little between the two sides over the 90 minutes in Córdoba but Fernando Zampedri’s second half header had looked to have handed Central victory.
Those 90 minutes were up and as the clock ticked into the five added minutes, Temperley struck back, Federico Mazur firing in low from just inside the penalty box.
The reliable Nestor Ortigoza converted first in the shootout and when goalkeeper Matías Fidel Castro blazed over Temperley’s initial effort, it was advantage Central. Matías Caruzzo opened the door for El Gasolero to get into it when he too put his penalty over but Jeremías Ledesma saved from Ramiro Costa in the next instance and so it was left to Washington Camacho and Leonardo Gil to tuck away the final two and secure victory.
Gimnasia or River Plate await Central in the final and while the Canalla’s record in the cup is impressive, they will be desperate to end this run of heartbreaks.
