They might be playing Nacional B football next season but Tigre’s astonishing form continues and with a 5-0 demolition of Atlético Tucumán in Victoria, El Matador may also end up competing in the 2020 Copa Libertadores. After a last-gasp win over Racing Club on Tuesday, Néstor Gorosito’s side swept aside Atlético Tucumán to all but seal a place in the Copa Superliga final.
Without the injured Walter Montillo, Tigre welcomed Lucas Menossi back into the starting eleven after suspension and the in-form midfielder opened the scoring after quarter of an hour, squeezing the ball under Cristian Lucchetti following a passage of wonderfully fluid passing.
A correct offside decision denied Javier Toledo an equaliser and moments later Tigre doubled their lead, a swift counter ending with Juan Cavallaro blasting into the top corner.
Federico González’s selfishness in front of goal prevented Tigre taking a three-goal lead into the break when a simple pass to Lucas Janson would have produced the simplest of tap-ins and although Ramiro Carrera rattled the home side’s crossbar, El Matador didn’t have to wait long after the break for another.
Diego Morales fired a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box sparking an electrifying five-minute spell that saw Nicolás Colazo rifle in number four before Cavallaro nodded in the fifth.
Atlético admirably stuck at it but found goalkeeper Gonzalo Marinelli in inspired form and with a five-goal deficit to overturn in Tucumán next week will be in need of a miracle.
