Tigre served up five goals and all but ensured their place in the Copa Superliga final but on Sunday evening in La Paternal, Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors couldn’t be separated and a cautious goalless draw leaves their semi final in the balance.
Supporters at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona reminded Carlos Tevez before kick off of his leg-breaking challenge on Ezequiel Ham the last time he visited the stadium but the added needle failed to fuel any excitement during a tepid first 45 minutes.
Cristian Pavón, a shadow of the player that Boca had hoped would eventually leave for some astronomical fee, was a threat with his pace in behind but his lack of form let Argentinos off as a delayed cutback to Darío Benedetto wasted one chance before goalkeeper Lucas Chaves smothered another.
A slight improvement after the break saw Chaves again deny Pavón, an incorrect offside flag halt the former Argentina international from rolling the ball into Agustín Obando for a simple tap-in and Pavón’s replacement Sebastián Villa also see Chaves thwart a one-on-one chance.
The home side were only able to pose a minimal threat and didn’t manage a single shot on Esteban Andrada’s goal. However, Boca were also not at their best and Benedetto volleying over the crossbar was the last indication that it was an evening for neither side.
They meet again in La Bombonera next Sunday, where Boca will be favourites to claim the spot in the final.
