The tie is a long way from over but with virtually the last kick of the game Argentinos Juniors ensured that they take a slender lead to Colombia next week instead of what had looked certain to be a precarious goalless draw with Deportes Tolima.
A last 16 clash against either Uruguay’s River Plate or Colón awaits and at the half way mark in this affair it is too close to proclaim a favourite but Argentinos Juniors have given themselves a shot thanks to Carlos Quintana’s injury time winner in La Paternal.
Los Bichos had shaded it over the 90 minutes without really working Tolima goalkeeper Álvaro Montero and when Gabriel Hauche clipped the post with ten minutes remaining it looked as though it could be one of those nights.
The Copa Sudamericana has certainly seen its fair share of narrow, evenly contested first legs and this was no different until the last action of stoppage time. A free-kick into the Tolima penalty box was stabbed goal wards by Quintana and with Montero unable to hold it the ball bobbled into the net to spark wild celebrations around the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona.
The sides meet again next Thursday in Ibagué with a last 16 spot still in the balance.
