The scoreline may have suggested otherwise but there were no shortage of talking points as Colón slipped to defeat two minutes from time against Zulia in Venezuela.
A goalless draw had looked certain after three disallowed efforts over the course of the game but with Colón goalkeeper Leonardo Burián missing due to the death of his brother, his substitute Ignacio Chicco fumbled the ball at a Zulia corner allowing Abel Casquete Rodríguez to bundle a winner.
It could have been very different for Colón who despite seeing Gastón Díaz sent off for a rash tackle on José Martínez after only 33 minutes thought they had taken the lead with a vital away goal. Emanuel Olivera headed the ten-man visitors in front before the break only for a VAR review to harshly decide that Luis Rodríguez had committed a foul in the build up.
Zulia would have the ball in the net twice themselves during the second half only for offside decisions to correctly rule them out.
And when it seemed neither side were to have much luck in front of goal, Chicco’s blunder gifted Zulia a winner.
Colón are certainly not out of it but must overturn the deficit in Santa Fe next week.
