It’s a good time to be an Estudiantes supporter and ahead of their historic return to Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi, El Pincha recorded a fourth consecutive win on Friday evening to climb to fifth in the Superliga.
Talleres were the final visitors to the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata and were behind after only a minute when Manuel Castro ghosted unmarked into the penalty box to tap in unmarked from yards out.
Only a matter of weeks ago Gabriel Milito was with a foot out the door as Estudiantes manager but having not conceded a goal now in five games, Castro’s early goal proved enough.
Ángel González came close to adding a second when he struck the woodwork in the second half and although Talleres saw plenty of possession they struggled to work Mariano Andújar. With La T still chasing the game, Juan Méndez was shown a second yellow card and with it their hopes of salvaging a point seemed to disappear.
Estudiantes’ next home game will be at their new stadium and although they may not be fifth at that point, El Pincha are on the up.
So too are Atlético Tucumán, who joined Estudiantes only three points behind the league leaders, after victory over Unión in Santa Fe.
With only two wins from the first eight games, Atlético’s drop off from a fifth-placed finish last season was steep but Ricardo Zielinski’s side made it five wins in a row on Friday to turn things back around.
Leandro Díaz scored the only goal of the game before the half hour mark and the Atlético centre-forward won’t score many easier this season after Augusto Lotti had sprinted through the defence to square for Díaz in front of an open goal.
Unión required a huge helping hand from the officials to snatch a point against Independiente in their last home game but had no such luck against Atlético. Instead Jonathan Bottinelli saw red late on and with it Unión slipped to defeat.
