Argentinos Juniors with work to do after first leg Copa Sudamericana draw (VIDEO)

An underwhelming start to 2020 has already seen Argentinos Juniors’ Superliga dreams fade and a first leg draw with Peruvian club Sport Huancayo leaves plenty to do in two weeks to ensure the Copa Sudamericana doesn’t go the same way.

Diego Dabove’s side dominated for long periods but as has been the problem domestically, Argentinos Juniors failed to find that final pass or the finishing touch in front of goal.

Edwar López was handed an opportunity up front on Tuesday evening and should have given the home side the lead early on despite forcing Joel Pinto into a good stop.

And with Argentinos Juniors pressing for that breakthrough it was the visitors that snatched the lead before the break. Nicking possession in their own half Sport Huancayo broke at pace with a numerical advantage and eventually Marcos Lliuya’s deflected shot flew into the net.

An away goal in La Paternal certainly makes things more complicated for Argentinos Juniors in the altitude of Huancayo in two weeks and defeat would have been even worse.

The reaction to Gabriel Hauche forcing an equaliser from close range twenty minutes from time made that clear. The 33-year-old snatched the ball from the net and ran back to the centre as Argentinos looked for a winner. A second goal that never came.

The two sides meet on February 25th and Sport Huancayo will sense they may not have a better chance of progression.
