San Lorenzo are looking for their fifth manager in the space of two season after Diego Monarriz’s short spell in charge was brought to an end by Racing Club on Saturday afternoon.

Mauricio Martínez’s first half header was enough to give the visitors a deserved win but it was another limp display from San Lorenzo that drew the frustration of supporters and unsurprisingly led swiftly to the departure of Monarriz.

Racing had already struck the woodwork through Matías Rojas when a free-kick swung into the penalty box found Martínez unmarked for the defender to head past Sebastián Torrico.

Ángel Romero missed a gilt edged chance soon after and had already sent a bicycle kick narrowly wide but it was Racing that looked more likely to score the next goal as the game went on.

Sebastián Beccacece’s side were unable to give themselves that level of comfort yet held on for three points to momentarily move into the top four. San Lorenzo meanwhile are back to the drawing board. President Marcelo Tinelli watched on as Ignacio Piatti made his return and 16-year-old Agustin Hausch was handed a debut, evidence of the good work that the academy has been doing, but the first team still looks rudderless and a new captain is required.

Independiente look equally lost but without the advantage of having a positive transfer window. Instead as the club continue to sell players without any possibility of incomings, Lucas Pusineri watched on as his side suffered a last minute defeat to Gimnasia.

Once more the red carpet was rolled out for Diego Maradona before kick-off as the World Cup winner was joined by his childhood icon Ricardo Bochini and Independiente’s hospitality continued into the game.

Only some wayward finishing by Matías Pérez García allowed Independiente’s shambolic defending off the hook and even after surviving those scares, El Rojo never looked like taking advantage at the other end.

A soporific second half appeared to be heading for a goalless draw when Sebastián Cocimano became the latest Gimnasia player to waste a gift presented to him by Independiente’s backline. However, deep in stoppage time Eric Ramírez found space at the back post and his deflected shot looped into the air over Martín Campaña.

Gimnasia remain at the foot of the promedio table but with other sides picking up points it was an absolutely vital victory to keep survival hopes alive.

Colón should be equally concerned about their status in the top flight as their freewill into the bottom three continued with a 4-0 defeat away to Newell’s Old Boys.

A strong start by Frank Kudelka’s side already had Colón on the back foot and it was no surprise when Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring after 12 minutes.

Hopes of a comeback from the visitors were dealt a severe blow ten minutes before the break when Rodrigo Aliendro was sent off for a challenge on Pablo Pérez and the returning Newell’s midfielder doubled the lead soon after.

With Newell’s in absolute control, Luis Leal headed a third after the restart and Cristian Lema capped off the victory with a fine free-kick.

Any lingering doubts over Newell’s Superliga safety should have been answered with the result and it is Colón now in desperate need of resuscitation.

Lastly in Tucumán, Pedro De La Vega’s brace off the bench had looked to have handed Lanús a win over Atlético only for an injury time equaliser to ensure a share of the points.

Former Lanús midfielder Nicolás Aguirre headed his first goal for El Decano to open the scoring after five minutes and that lead held until midway through the second half.

Youngster Pedro De la Vega, who has been used sparingly this season had only been on the pitch a minute, bent a superb left-footed shot into the top corner from 25 yards and the 19-year-old slotted in a second a minute from time.

Yet there was time for further drama. José Sand uncharacteristically missed a glaring opportunity from yards out and Atlético defender Dylan Gissi was fortunate to avoid punishment for what looked like a kick on De La Vega. That leniency would prove crucial with Gissi rising in the 94th minute to head an equaliser and deny Lanús victory.
