The Romero brothers give San Lorenzo victory, Aldosivi edge Estudiantes & Patronato hold Gimnasia (VIDEO)

Optimism continues to grow in Bajo Flores as San Lorenzo all but booked their spot in the next round of the Copa Liga Profesional with a 2-0 win over Argentinos Juniors. Mariano Soso’s side maintained their unbeaten start to the season and once again the Romero brothers were central to El Ciclón’s success.

The Paraguayan pair combined for the opener just before half time with Ángel crossing for brother Óscar to head past Lucas Chaves and soon after the restart Ángel scored an almost identical free-kick to the superb strike that helped San Lorenzo beat Estudiantes.

Ángel’s form and goalscoring record of late for both club and country one of the reasons why San Lorenzo supporters are beginning to believe again. Only two defeats and a huge swing in goal difference could see thee Cuervos not line up in the Fase Campeonato and that looks unlikely not least given Argentinos Juniors’ form. One goal scored so far and that was a golazo courtesy of Damián Batallini who now leaves the club to join up with Mexican club San Luis.

In the same group Estudiantes’ hopes are now extinguished after a 1-0 defeat to Aldosivi.

Emanuel Iñiguez headed the game’s only goal on the stroke of half time and while Estudiantes saw plenty of the ball and created chances it was another blank for Leandro Desábato’s side. No goals and a solitary point is a worryingly poor return for El Pincha.

Meanwhile in Group 6, Gimnasia were unable to find a way past Patronato despite playing against ten-men for the majority of the game and in doing so failed to go above Huracán into second.

Patronato, who are yet to win a game, had Leandro Marín sent off for a crude challenge on Eric Ramírez after half an hour and with Gimnasia already looking more dangerous the visitors looked likely to celebrate three points.

Johan Carbonero had struck the woodwork earlier and despite dominating El Lobo couldn’t find a way past Daniel Sappa in the Patronato goal. It could and should have been worse for Gimnasia as substitute Germán Rivero ran clear in stoppage time after beating goalkeeper Jorge Broun but as the striker dawdled with the goal open Leonardo Morales got back to make a saving challenge.
