Ten-man Talleres earn point from Newell’s & Central win in Mendoza (VIDEO)

Group 4 in the 2020 Copa Liga Profesional had been dubbed the ‘group of death’ and so it has proved with all four teams vying for those two qualifying spots in the Fase Campeonato. Talleres remain top after grinding out a draw away to Newell’s Old Boys on Monday but four points separate all four sides with two games to play.

Newell’s were excellent in their victory over Lanús last week and needed only minutes to lead against Talleres. A long ball over the top caught the visitors flat and Maxi Rodríguez slotted past Mauricio Caranta.

However, Talleres are unbeaten for a reason and should have been level soon after when Franco Fragapane blazed over from close range.

The visitors’ task became more complicated when Juan Méndez was shown a second yellow card just before the break yet even with ten men Talleres kept coming forward and eventually found their equaliser through the impressive Tomás Pochettino.

Talleres travel to Lanús next weekend while Newell’s are at La Bombonera to take on Boca in a group that could well go to the wire.

In Group 3 Rosario Central kept their hopes alive with victory over Godoy Cruz in Mendoza.

Diego Novaretti’s header after quarter of an hour proved enough and inflicted a fourth straight defeat on Godoy Cruz.

Banfield and River still lead the way but with Central hosting River on Saturday in between the Millonarios playing a Copa Libertadores last 16 tie, the chance of an upset could be on the cards.
