Newell’s get off to winning start as Arsenal suffer defeat

Ignacio Scocco celebrates giving Newell’s the lead last night

Newell’s Old Boys continued their great start to 2013 with a 3 – 1 win over Olimpia of Paraguay in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa last night. After a goal less first half Newell’s got their break in the 70th minute when former Liverpool midfielder, Maxi Rodriguez was tripped in the box and last season’s top goal scorer Ignacio Scocco was on hand to dispatch the penalty. 5 minutes later Horacio Orzan added a second and although Olimpia pulled a goal back with 2 minutes to go there was still time for Maxi Rodriguez to seal the victory. Meanwhile, in Bolivia, Arsenal lost their opening game to The Strongest (yes, that is the actual name). Arsenal went behind to a long range effort in the 18th minute but managed to get themselves back into the game after half time thanks to a wonderful free kick by Dario Benedetto. However, they soon found themselves down to nine men as Damian Perez and then Emilio Zelaya were sent off. With the obvious numerical disadvantage The Strongest capitalised and in the 85th minute Luis Melgar flicked home a corner to give them the victory. With games to follow against Atletico Miniero and Sao Paulo of Brazil getting out of this group could prove difficult. VIDEOS OF THE GOALS HERE!
