An eventful Friday nights football saw Argentinos Juniors lose at home to Arsenal leaving them bottom of the table and without a point from their first 3 games. This run of results has seen manager, Gabriel Schurrer “resign” with immediate effect bringing an end to his short winless spell in charge. The game itself also saw another contender for the goal of the month with a tremendous strike from Carlos Carbonero. In the later game San Lorenzo drew for the third consecutive game 1 – 1 with Estudiantes. ALL THE GOALS (CARBONERO’S IS WORTH SEEING) CAN BE SEEN HERE….
ARGENTINOS JUNIORS 1 – 2 ARSENAL
A game which Argentinos and Schurrer will look back on and think how things could have been so different. Argentinos were much the better side for large parts of this game and twice hit the woodwork but were unable to make their pressure count. Almost inevitably it was Arsenal who took the lead in the 66th minute when a cross was not dealt with by defence or goalkeeper allowing Julio Furch the easiest of tap ins. Things got worse for Argentinos when a few minutes later Carlos Carbonero controlled the ball on his chest all of 40 yards from goal and unleashed a volley dipping over the keeper and in to the top corner. Argentinos continued to fight and got a goal back in the 86th minute through Leandro Barrera but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation. 3 straight defeats this season proved to be the limit and so after the game Schurrer announced his departure.
ESTUDIANTES 1 – 1 SAN LORENZO
San Lorenzo are perhaps unlucky not to have another clean sheet as it took an unmighty deflection against Estudiantes to finally break their disciplined backline. Duvan Zapata’s shot cruelly deflected into the back of the net after just 7 minutes. Despite not scoring in the last 2 games San Lorenzo were able to get back on level terms in the 79th minute when defender, Santiago Gentiletti headed home a freekick. Estudiantes will be relieved to have their first points of the season following some dismal performances so far this campaign. San Lorenzo having drawn both games 0-0 previously can draw some positives from the result, they are still unbeaten and have now scored a goal.
