River Plate do enough to set up Lanus clash in Copa Sudamericana

Colombian, Teo Gutierrez gave River the lead earlier tonight

River Plate managed to turnaround last week’s loss in Ecuador with a 2-0 win in El Monumental. Despite making heavy work of things at times, River’s dominance prevailed and Liga de Loja rarely threatened Marcelo Barovero’s goal. The crucial goal came in the 36th minute when Manuel Lanzini got in behind the defensive line and unselfishly squared the ball for Teo Gutierrez to tap the ball into the unguarded net. The 1-0 scoreline would have been enough to see River through but Lanzini made sure in the second half with a moment of brilliance. Twisting away from several defenders outside the box, Lanzini’s right footed strike had just enough pace and precision to beat Luis Fernandez. The win sets up a an all-Argentine Quarter Final against Lanus. If River can get past Lanus then a place in the Copa Libertadores beckons, knowing that Velez are already there courtesy of their Super Final victory. SEE THE GOALS HERE….
