Juventus continued to hold off the challenge of Roma and remain at the summit of Serie A after a 2-0 win against Lazio thanks to the Argentine strike force of Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuaín. Dybala’s fine, skidding volley provided the breakthough before Higuaín doubled the advantage shortly after from close range.

Giovanni Simeone’s stock keeps rising and on Sunday the 21-year-old slotted home his eighth league goal of the season in Genoa’s 2-2 draw with Crotone. Lucas Ocampos was also on target from the penalty spot but the two young Argentine’s goals could prevent relegation threatened Crotone claiming a point.

Another regular to this feature, Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gómez chalked up Serie A goal number six from the penalty spot as Atalanta narrowly defeated Sampdoria to move into sixth.

Barcelona might be playing catch up with Real Madrid and be without Andres Iniesta but Lionel Messi gave an inspirational performance on Sunday to help Luis Enrique’s side to a 4-0 win over Eibar. Dropping deep into midfield, the Argentina captain was at the heart of everything and had Barça’s finishing been better, the 29-year-old could have had a hatful of asssists. As it was Messi had to make do with only his 15th league goal of the season.

Jorge Sampaoli’s Sevilla remain Real’s closest rivals at present after a thrilling 4-3 win away to Osasuna on Sunday. Franco Vázquez headed Los Rojiblancos ahead ten minutes from time and the vistors held on for an invaluable three points.

Former Estudiantes winger Pablo Piatti was on target in Espanyol’s victory against Granada. The 27-year-old’s smart low finish put the home side back ahead before the break and Marc Navarro added a third early in the second half.

Exciting youngster Mateo García scored his first LaLiga goal in Las Palmas’ 1-1 draw with Deportivo La Coruña. The 20-year-old arrived from Instituto in August and despite netting in the Copa del Rey was yet to celebrate a league goal until Saturday.

And on the subject of talented young players, Valentin Vada struck his first goal for Bordeaux in a 1-0 win over Toulouse. The 20-year-old defensive midfield player burst into the penalty area in the first minute to smash a volley into the net with the composure of a striker.

Argentina international Emmanuel Mas also scored his first goal in Europe with a thunderous header just before half time to hand new side Trabzonspor victory against Kasimpasa.

The big game in Liga MX was a repeat of last month’s Apertura final between Tigres and Club América and while penalties were needed to separate the pair on that occasion,  all that was needed on Saturday were Ismael Sosa and Lucas Zelarrayán. The former Independiente striker blasted the champions ahead after a minute and Zelarrayán’s outstanding free kick put them back ahead following América’s equaliser. A stunning volley from the ex-Belgrano forward and a delicate finish from Sosa ended the contest after half time.

Tijuana scored an impressive away win against Matías Almeyda’s title hopefuls, Chivas thanks to Milton Caraglio’s towering header in the Estadio Chivas.

There was another surprising result in the Estadio Nemesio Díez as Chiapas stunned Toluca after Argentine-born Jonathan Fabbro struck the only goal of the game with a fierce free kick into the top corner.

Finally, Maxi Barreiro scored his first goal since moving to Necaxa to help his new club to a 1-0 win against Pachuca. The 31-year-old cut inside onto his left foot and fired the ball past Oscar Pérez into the bottom corner.
