Atlético Tucumán go top with victory in San Juan, Huracán see off Tigre, Gimnasia peg back Central & Argentinos held by San Martín (VIDEO)

While Sunday’s focus may have been on the Superclásico, Atlético Tucumán continued to quietly go about their business and with a 3-1 win in San Juan, El Decano climbed to the top of the Superliga table.

A somewhat slow first half gave way for a second period in which Atlético simply went up a gear and swept away their hosts. Guillermo Acosta broke the deadlock shortly after the break with a shot that beat Luis Ardente at his near post and soon after Luis Miguel Rodriguez doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

The visitors could easily have been four or five ahead by the time that Mauro Matos scored the third. Favio Álvarez twisting and turning away from defenders before rolling the ball into the path of the veteran striker to smash in.

Pablo Palacios headed a late consolation for San Martín but while their visitors went top, the home side look increasingly likely to drop into the B Nacional.

Another side edging dangerously closer to relegation is Tigre and after their bright start to the season, El Matador were defeated 2-0 by Huracán in Victoria.

Augusto Batalla ensured that Tigre didn’t fall behind early with a fine penalty save to deny Andrés Chávez and while Huracán remained the better side, both goalkeepers were forced into a series of excellent stops to keep the scores level.

The game turned fifteen minutes from time when Lucas Rodriguez was shown a straight red for a reckless lunge on Carlos Auzqui and moments later Huracán were in front. Christian Chimino’s deep cross from the right found Juan Garro and the former Godoy Cruz forward headed the ball past Batalla.

The one goal would have been enough but deep into stoppage time, Diego Mendoza unleashed a fierce dipping volley from 35 yards that wrapped up the points in spectacular fashion.

Rosario Central’s early season form has begun to slip and Edgardo Bauza’s side are now three games without a win after Gimnasia earned a 1-1 draw in La Plata.

A wonderful Leonardo Gil free-kick had given Central the lead but immediately after half time Santiago Silva won Gimnasia a soft penalty and got up to score from the spot.

Meanwhile in Tucumán, San Martín’s wait for a first win back in the top flight goes on after a goalless draw with Argentinos Juniors. The longer that run goes on, the more certain a swift return to the B Nacional is.

San Martín de Tucumán  0 – 0  Argentinos Juniors
